Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $3.91/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.01/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just under the 451,000 tonne level. Nickel is slightly lower at the moment and off earlier lows at around $.05/lb. Considering what world equity markets are doing today, nickel is faring well so far. Asian markets ended lower, European markets are down, and US futures are now trading well below the 'unofficial' bear market trigger point. Analysts can argue about whether the Dow is in bear territory or not, but not many nickel watchers would describe the last few years of nickel trading, as nothing but grizzly.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $3.89/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose sharply on Monday and now total just shy of the 452,750 tonne level. We are now only 17,634 tonnes shy of LME nickel's all time record high level. We have read no analyst that is predicting stockpiles to grow this year, so a new record high this year, could drop a few jaws. No one was predicting a new record high for 2015 either, after Indonesia halted all exports of unprocessed nickel ore in January. The market has, and continues to show, that it can surprise. US markets ended the first two weeks of the trading year, dangerously close to a key bear market level, and after a holiday yesterday, re-open today to positive futures. CHina reported yesterday its manufacturing for 2015 grew at slower numbers than expected and markets around the world, expect China to take further stimulus efforts in teh near future. This is helping boost equity and commodity markets - at least for today.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $3.70/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Tuesday and now total just over the 436,700 tonne level. Nickel traded at a new 12 year low yesterday, but is slightly higher today. Interesting piece from the Bloomberg article below about Russia Norilsk. "The Russian company that vies with Vale as the biggest producer is budgeting for an average of about $9 000 a metric ton in 2016, said two people familiar with the situation. The figure is 24% lower than the average rate of $11 890 a ton in 2015, and shows Norilsk is planning for the possibility that prices for the metal will fail to recover after plunging by 47% in the past year to the lowest level since 2003." Based on this article, Norilsk puts the 2015 average at $5.39/lb and is forecasting $4.08/lb for 2016. IN another Bloomberg article linked below, the author states "While forecasts have been slashed, nickel will average $12,250 a metric ton in 2016, according to the median estimate of 16 analysts compiled by Bloomberg."
  • Average price of cash nickel so far this month - $3.81/lb

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $3.93/lb  . Indicators at 6:10 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.13/lb and getting dangerously close to 2015's trading low of $3.77/lb. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Wednesday and now total just over the 438,800 tonne level. China's bear run continued overnight, with trading once again halted to keep the plunge damage in check. And once again, nervous markets around the world, are down in concern. Nickel is trading much lower this morning, after a late day spike yesterday. As we mentioned earlier in the week, index re-weighing begins tomorrow and will run all next week. It is possible we could see nickel attract some buying interest next week, but that remains to be seen. In the mean time, Dow futures are down 2.2% at the moment, so it looks to be an ugly day on Wall Street as well.

Nickel was caught up in the sell off as well. The Chinese government took steps too stabilize their stock market earlier today, and markets around the world., including commodities, are in a much better mood today. Monday, January 4

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $4.01/lb  . Indicators at 6:15 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.08/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel fell on the last working day of 2015 and ended the year at 441,294 tonnes. This compares to 413,148 tonnes on the last day of 2014 and a record high of 470,376 tonnes on June 4th. SMM is reporting nickel ore stockpiles held at six major Chinese ports fell by 300,000 tonnes last week and ended the year at 9.97 million tonnes. This compares to 13.65 million tonnes at the beginning of 2015, but considering SMM forecast last January that China stockpiles would be depleted by April, the drop of 27% seems a lot less dramatic. Nickel closed at $6.72/lb the last day of 2014 and has treaded either side of the $4/lb level  since late November. With China closing in 4 weeks for their week long Chinese New Year you wouldn't expect to see nickel do much, but we could see some movement when funds begin to restructure commodity funds this month.
