After momentarily dipping below $4.90/lb, cash nickel bounced sharply yesterday, with plenty of room left to recovery the earlier weeks steep loss. Some of the initial panic about Greece defaulting has diminished, with traders more confident something will be worked out to keep Greece in the Euro, and if not, the world may not fall apart after all.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $5.35/lb . Indicators at 6:20 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb lower, but trending higher after a brutal opening, with other London traded base metals trading lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME licensed warehouses fell on Monday and now total just under the 456,450 tonne level. On the last day of May, stockpiles stood at 465,346 tonnes. Today's reading is 7,908 tonnes lower, its first recorded monthly loss in years. And speaking of years, we saw nickel trading at May 2009 levels early this morning. That's Great Recession lows! Nickel will continue to remain volatile until Europe and Greece come to some sort of agreement, or part ways, but if we see these price levels stick around for awhile, we will see some nickel producers stop production.

Cash nickel is averaging about $.25/lb lower so far this month when compared to May numbers, and while we disagree with those who feel nickel's slump has yet to find a floor, we see little reason for any significant change in nickel's course anytime soon. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell for the eighth consecutive day, a first i years, and now total just over the 461,550 tonne level. Nickel appears to have found some support earlier in the session and at least for now, the slide has found some footing.  Watch the inventory levels.   Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $5.95/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.13/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading mostly lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Friday and ended the week just over 464,500 tonne level. Shanghai Metals Market is reporting weekly stockpiles at six major Chinese ports rose by 70,000 tonnes to total 11.75 million tonnes. This is about where stockpiles totaled back in February of this year. The most recent bullish run for nickel has come to an end, as the Euro slides on news that the most recently held Greece debt talks have failed and default fears rise again. We understand Greece still has two weeks to make a deal with its creditors so we will see if the panic some European markets are seeing today, is justified. Lot of speculation on what may or may not happen 'if' Greece defaults, but no one really knows.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $6.04/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.09/lb lower, but around $.09/lb above earlier session lows. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell for a sixth consecutive session and now total just over the 465,250 tonne level. Nickel turned south yesterday, after failing to hold onto the line of resistance for a second consecutive day. With the Euro dropping this morning, nickel looked like it might be in serious trouble this morning, dropping like a rock, but has since regained its composure, and while still down, it no longer resembles a rout. With little else to talk about, Greece appears to remain the chief threat to commodities in general, with its daily effect on the Euro and the great unknown of what might happen to world economies if Greece defaults. Today's version is abridged and back to normal on Monday. Have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $6.07/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.11/lb higher, with other London traded base metals trading higher as well - but with much less enthusiasm. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell for a fourth consecutive day, and now total just over the 467,000 tonne level. Nickel was unable to hold above the technical line of resistance yesterday, and is making another run today. A weaker US Dollar is also helping base metals in general. Tightness remains on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, with the newly traded nickel showing only 10,621 tonnes in stock, and 6,582 of those tonnes on warrant. Until this inventory squeeze is rectified, we could continue to see interest in nickel.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Thursday's trading session at $5.87/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.03/lb lower, with other London traded base metals trading mostly lower as well. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell on Thursday and now total just under the 469,500 tonne level. Greece has asked the IMF to forgo a payment due today, and asked to have all of their June debt payments bulked together for one bill due at the end of the month - effectively kicking the can down the road and adding June to the list of months filled with uncertainty for the Euro. The traded price of nickel remains lower than its May average, but higher than the April average, with little momentum to do much of anything. Enjoy your weekend and it all starts again on Monday.

  • Three month nickel closed Monday's trading session at $5.89/lb . Indicators at 6:30 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.04/lb lower, but recoverying from earlier lows, with other London traded base metals trading mixed and quietly. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell slightly on Monday and now total just over the 465,500 tonne level. While nickel is presently lower, it is getting some postive momentum from a Euro that is trading higher against the US Dollar this month. Traders have apparently decided the world will not end with Greece defaulting, as this seems more likely.

China's official PMI rose to 50.2 from 50.1, and the Euro manufacturing PMI rose to 52.2 from 50. US PMI numbers to be published later today.
