Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Tuesday's trading session at $4.82/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.02/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose slightly on Tuesday and totals remain above just over the 361,850 tonne level. Traders moved nickel higher yesterday after the Philippine mine suspension news was released - but now they are trying to decide exactly how much and how quickly the news will affect the industry. It wasn't that long ago when the Philippine nickel industry was irrelevant, but the creation of the so called 'pig nickel' industry in China and the ban of raw ore from Indonesia cast the Philippines into the main spotlight. Now, as a little over 50% of the Philippine nickel production has been halted, it is being announced that the Indonesia nickel industry is climbing back in the ring with smelters open and the ban under review.

  • Three month nickel closed Friday's trading session at $4.84/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.05/lb lower. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses fell both Thursday and Friday and start the week just over the 362,350 tonne level. The result from the mining audit in the Philippines is too be announced tomorrow, with a dozen more mines expected to be shut down. Danske Bank commodities analyst Jens Pedersen is reporting "On one hand you have the relatively weak demand that is weighing on prices, but you also have mining sector consolidation that is adding some more fundamental support.". So far, eight nickel mines have been closed as part of the new Philippine government purge, and that number could double tomorrow. And Indonesia is back in the news as mines there are concerned about a lack of power needed to build smelters, and worried the government there might back track on its ore export ban.

Daily Nickel/Stainless Steel Briefing (8:00 AM CST is 1PM in London)
  • Three month nickel closed Wednesday's trading session at $4.69/lb . Indicators at 6:00 am CST today show 3 month nickel trading around $.06/lb higher. Stockpiles of nickel stored in LME approved warehouses rose on Wednesday and now total just over the 364,900 tonne level. The Fed surprised no one with its decision to continue the nearly non existent interest rate in the US, and this has hurt the US Dollar, which in turn, is helping make base metals worth more. The carefully worded statement of the two day meeting reassured traders that improvements in the economy had been noted - have confidence market, even if we don't show it - but we are waiting for more evidence of a continued recovery - but have confidence market, even if we don't show it. One thing is for sure. Actions speak louder than words and eight years after the great recession began, the US Fed shows it has little faith in the recovery even if the rest of the world is much more confident. This is our last update for the week, so we wish each of you a safe and enjoyable weekend and invite you back next week.
